Rustie - Canal Mills, Leeds - 24/11/12

It's becoming increasingly easy to spoil sets and live performances for yourself by getting the lowdown on the internet beforehand, ruining any surprises the artist might have in store for you. The opposite happened in this situation - I'd seen Rustie DJ at a Boiler Room showcase on YouTube, and to be honest it simply was not very good. He was reloading tracks at awkward moments and the selection wasn't particularly exciting. Of course the crowd was not hyped, being the Boiler Room and all, but it was still disappointing. So when SBTRKT's DJ set ended abruptly due to the roof leaking rainfall onto his gear and Koreless came back in to keep things calm, we were a little apprehensive to what Rustie could bring. He brought everything, and some.

He managed to build a lot of momentum impeccably mixing classics of his own making and of Warp and LuckyMe label-mates such as Hudson Mohawke. This set him up to do what he liked in the latter half of his set, throwing on tunes from the likes of D Double E, Darq E Freaker and 50 Cent. And if that wasn't enough, after looping the Ayo Technology sample, he started scratching out of the blue. Not only was this set flawless and right up my street in terms of music taste, but Rustie also reminded me pleasant surprises do still happen.
