Four Tet Live - Bestival 2012 - 09/09/12

Several months prior to Bestival, I was sucked into the world of Twitter and this more than paid off. Four Tet was billed to play a back-to-back DJ set with Dan Snaith (Caribou, Daphni) on the final night of the festival but a few days before, he hinted there may or may not be a sneaky live thing going down earlier.

So on the early afternoon of the Sunday, when many people had yet to leave their tents, a few of us turn up to a band called Turbowolf. Once that's over, most people have left but 15 or 20 of us are at the front, waiting to see if our hopes would be rewarded.

Sure enough, the frame of Kieren Hebden comes into focus with his signature tired eyes, fluffy wafro and spiritual Om t-shirt. The live set up is somewhat raw and basic but seriously intimate. As he ventures through his discography, the tent fills out.

We're treated to his dancefloor-oriented material from Pink but the ominous relentlessness of Plastic People is also a highlight. The build-up to Love Cry is much anticipated and when the vocal loop finally drops, the crowd erupts in euphoria and even the ever-humble, ever-grafting Four Tet can't help but let a couple of smiles break through.
